Our Why

SOME THINGS WE KNOW

  • In 2018, 19.1% of U.S. adults (47.6 million people) had a mental illness of some kind. [source]

  • In that same year, 15% of U.S. adults (37.1 million people) received any kind of mental health services. This means 10.5 million adults had a mental illness but did not seek treatment.

  • The average delay between onset of mental illness and first treatment is 5–10 years. [source]

  • Fear of being stigmatized or discriminated against is one of the primary reasons people choose not to seek help for a mental illness. [source]

We believe people who suffer with mental health challenges will live happier, more stable, more fulfilling lives if they seek out treatment that can help them. We want to be the force encouraging them to get that treatment. We know that every year, every month, every day past without it leads to suffering that could have been avoided.

HOW DO WE ACHIEVE OUR “WHY”?

Mark Wilhelm

As a child of seven or eight, Mark had a fondness for telling stories to his little sister. He would dream up tales of her adventures with her favorite characters from television and film, and he’d tell long, meandering narratives meant to entertain her. But during one such long-winded telling, one of his parents said to him, exasperated: “Mark, the story has to end.” This interaction set the stage for Mark’s lifelong fascination with people, stories, and how they’re perceived by those who receive them.

Today, Mark leverages these dual fascinations as both a writer and marketer, always keeping in mind who is being engaged with, what they believe and desire, and how he can help guide them toward the solutions they seek. His mantra: every story should begin with the ending clearly in mind.
